Nach der Besetzung Griechenlands im April 1941 zwang die deutsche Besatzungsbehörde rund 20.000 Griechinnen und Griechen auf Kreta, für die Deutschen zu arbeiten, zu einem großen Teil unter harten Bedingungen in den Bergwerken im Norden des Landes.
In der folgenden Zeit wurden weitere 100.000 Griechinnen und Griechen zur Arbeit für die deutsche Wehrmacht dienstverpflichtet, darunter ab 1943 auch 16-Jährige.

After that, an additional 100,000 Greeks — including even 16-year-olds, starting in 1943 — were requisitioned to work for the German Wehrmacht.
