Er besteht darin, dass auf TiO2-Oberflächen nach Bestrahlung mit ultraviolettem Licht der Randwinkel (Θ) zu Wasser beliebig klein werden kann (Superhydrophilie).
Bei längerer Lagerung im Dunkeln steigt Θ wieder langsam an.
