Nach dem Amazonas handelt es sich um das zweitgrößte zusammenhängende tropische Waldgebiet der Erde.
Die Wälder sind direkte Lebensgrundlage von 65 Millionen Menschen und beherbergen mehr als 400 Säugetierarten, über 1.000 Vogelarten und mehr als 20.000 Pflanzenarten, wovon 10.000 endemisch sind.
