Am 31. März 1748 wurde die Region von einem starken Erdbeben erschüttert, und unter den am meisten beschädigten Gebäuden waren der Bischofspalast, das Zollhaus und fast alle Hauptkirchen.
Der Palast war nahezu unbewohnbar geworden, und die Kirchen drohten in Ruinen zu zerfallen.
Aus diesem Grund zogen der Bischof und seine Familie in den Palácio de São Lourenço und kehrten erst 1751 in den Bischofspalast zurück, als die umfangreichen Aufbau- und Renovierungsarbeiten beendet waren.

The palace was nearly uninhabitable and many of the churches were about to fall into ruins.
Consequently, the bishop and his family moved to the Palácio de São Lourenço and only returned to their palace in 1751 after extensive rebuilding and repairing works had been executed.
