Die Kombination aus Winkel und Häftlingsnummer – also die unmittelbare Information zu Herkunft, Dauer des Aufenthalts im Lager und „Haftgrund“ – ermöglichte der SS und auch erfahrenen Häftlingen die schnelle Einschätzung der Position eines Häftlings und damit häufig auch seiner Überlebenschancen.

The combination of triangle and prisoner number—the immediate information about origin, length of presence in the camp, and Haftgrund—enabled the SS, as well as experienced prisoners, to quickly size up the situation of an inmate and thus frequently assess his chances of survival as well.
