Das System VNREDSat-1 basiert auf dem Astrium-Satelliten AstroSat 100, wie schon das gemeinsam mit Chile aufgelegte Programm SSOT oder das in Zusammenarbeit mit Algerien entwickelte Satellitensystem ALSAT-2.
VNREDSat-1 wurde am 6. Mai 2013 mit einer Vega-Rakete vom europäischen Weltraumbahnhof in Kourou (Französisch-Guayana) im Orbit platziert.
Der 130-kg-Satellit VNREDSat-1 wird von seiner sonnensynchronen Umlaufbahn in 600 bis 700 km Höhe aus eine Schwadbreite von 17,5 km abtasten und Bilder mit einer Auflösung von 2,5 m im panchromatischen bzw. von 10 m im multispektralen Modus (4 Bänder) aufnehmen.

VNREDSat-1 was placed in orbit on 6 May 2013 aboard a Vega rocket from the European Space Centre in Kourou, French Guiana.
The 130kg satellite will image at 2.5m in panchromatic mode and 10 m in multi-spectral mode (four bands) with a 17.5km swath, and will orbit at 600–700km in a sun synchronous orbit.

Airbus Defence and Space ist Hauptauftragnehmer für die Ariane-Trägerraketen und steht seit 2003 an der Spitze des Industrienetzwerks für die Ariane 5.
