Seit 1987 ist René Kästli Titularprofessor an der Universität St. Gallen.
Von 1979 bis 1996 war er Mitglied des Wirtschaftsausschusses der Europäischen Freihandelsassozi- ation.
Zwischen 1986 und 1996 war er Hauptexperte in den Fächern Bank- und Volks- wirtschaftslehre an der Eidgenössischen Bankfachprüfung, von 1997 bis 2002 war er Mitglied des für diese Prüfung zuständigen Ausschusses.

From 1986 to 1996 he was principal expert for economics and banking at the examinations for federally certified bank employees, from 1997 to 2002 a member of the Committee of the same organisation.
