The Exploding Plastic Inevitable ( EPI ) war eine von Andy Warhol inszenierte Multimedia-Performance.
Dafür setzte der Künstler mehrere Projektoren ein, die seine Filme zeigten (z. B. Harlot, Blow Job, Empire oder Sleep), Stroboskope und verschiedene andere Lichtquellen sowie TänzerInnen;begleitet wurde das Ganze von Livemusik von Velvet Underground and Nico und von aufgezeichneter Popmusik.
Warhol hatte zwar schon vorher mit der Vorführung seiner Filme zu Musikbegleitung experimentiert, EPI aber aus einem Filmscreening und einem Velvet-Underground-Auftritt entwickelt, die er für eine Tagung der Society for Clinical Psychiatry in New York im Januar 1966 organisiert hatte.

It was comprised of several projectors showing his films (including Harlot, Blow Job, Empire, and Sleep), strobe and other miscellaneous lights, and dancers, accompanied by live music performed by the Velvet Underground and Nico, as well as recorded pop music.
Though Warhol had previously experimented with the projection of his movies to the accompaniment of music, the EPI itself derived from a film screening and a Velvet Underground performance during a presentation he made to the Society for Clinical Psychiatry in New York in January 1966.
