Die Methode des Gene Silencing wird erfolgreich in der Forschung angewandt, um die Funktion einzelner Gene zu überprüfen und ihre Bedeutung für das Überleben eines Organismus zu bestimmen.
Um aber neben ihrer biochemischen und physiologischen Funktion, die im Labor gut untersucht werden kann, auch die ökologische Rolle einzelner Gene zu bestimmen, ist es unerlässlich, Organismen in ihrem natürlichen Lebensraum zu untersuchen.

Hierzu soll ein Zwei-Promotor-System verwendet werden, in dem die Transkription des GOI durch einen starken konstitutiven Promotor kontrolliert wird und gleichzeitig durch einen induzierbaren Promotor das post-transkriptionelle Gen-Silencing reguliert werden kann.
So lässt sich die Expression toxischer Proteine gezielt an- und ausschalten, wodurch der Produktionsprozess deutlich leichter gesteuert werden kann.

For this purpose a two-promoter-system shall be used, in which the transcription of the GOI is controlled by a strong constitutive promoter, while at the same time post-transcriptional gene-silencing is regulated by an inducible second promoter.
This allows selective turning on and off of toxin expression and therefore facilitation of regulation of the protein production process.
