Bei der von den Materialexperten verwendeten sogenannten Micro- oder Nano-Indentation wird ein vorher genau festgelegtes, spitz zulaufendes Gewicht in das zu untersuchende Material gedrückt und dann gemessen, wie die Diagonalen des Eindrucks ausschauen:
Sind sie sehr kurz, ist das Material hart, sind sie breit und tief, dann ist es weich.
