Seine Ideen der „ Non-Cooperation “ in allen Institutionen der Verwaltung und des öffentlichen Lebens führten schließlich 1947 zur Unabhängigkeit Indiens und Pakistans, denen blutige Auseinandersetzungen zwischen Hindus und Mohammedanern folgten.
Gandhi wurde 1948 durch einen fanatischen Hindu ermordet.
