Zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts fasste Max J. Friedländer deren Mitglieder unter dem Sammelbegriff des " Antwerpener Manierismus " zusammen und etablierte damit für die Werke der Künstler einerseits einen gemeinsamen Stilbegriff; andererseits vergab er Notnamen, um die Werke unterschiedlichen Künstlern zuzuordnen.
