Angeregt von der Darbietung eines auf Weingläsern musizierenden Virtuosen, baute er 1761 ein Instrument, bei dem auf einer Achse, die über Fußantrieb in Bewegung versetzt wird, halbkugelförmige Glasschalen ("Kalotten") unterschiedlicher Größe aufgereiht sind.
