Gessler und seine Mitarbeiter haben vor über zehn Jahren das Hey2-Gen identifiziert.
In ihren Untersuchungen konnten sie außerdem zeigen, dass das Gen im Tiermodell eine wichtige Rolle übernimmt, wenn Herzscheidewand und Herzklappen ausgebildet werden.
„ Dass das Gen auch an der elektrischen Aktivität von Herzmuskel- und Reizleitungszellen beteiligt ist, war jedoch bis dato nicht nachweisbar “, sagt Gessler.

In their studies, they were also able to show in an animal model that the gene plays a significant role in the formation of the interventricular septum and of the cardiac valves.
"However, the fact that the gene is involved in the electrical activity of the cardiac muscle and conduction cells has not been shown before, " says Gessler.
