Die pythagoreische Harmonielehre gilt in der Antike als universaler Maßstab der musikalischen Komposition und daraus abgeleitet auch als Maßstab des architektonischen Entwurfs – sei es z. B. in Form der Säulenordnungen, des Maßverhältnisses des Grundrisses eines Gebäudes oder der Gestaltung von Fassaden.
Im platonischen Dialog Timaios, in dem es um die Erschaffung der Weltseele und um die kosmische Ordnung im Sinne einer Harmonie der Himmelssphären geht, werden die pythagoreischen Verhältnisse des Ganzen zu seinen Teilen erläutert.
Zahlenharmonien manifestierten sich nach den Pythagoreern sowohl im Bau des gesamten Kosmos als auch der Struktur der menschlichen Seele.

Dabei ist die große Oberfläche der Antenne von etwa 7.850 m² wichtig für den sicheren Nachweis der außerordentlich schwachen Radiosignale, während der große Durchmesser von 100 m für das vergleichsweise hohe Winkelauflösungsvermögen maßgeblich ist, das heißt dem kleinsten Abstand an der Himmelssphäre, bei dem das Teleskop zwei verschiedene Objekte noch trennen kann.
Dieses Auflösungsvermögen beträgt zum Beispiel 35 Bogensekunden bei einer Wellenlänge von 1,3 cm und ist damit etwa zweimal besser als das Auflösungsvermögen des menschlichen Auges für sichtbares Licht.

The large surface of the antenna ( approximately 7,850 m² ) is crucial in detecting extremely weak radio signals. The large diameter of 100 meters makes it possible to reach a comparably high angular resolutionI ( defined as the smallest distance in the celestial sphere where the telescope is still able to distinguish between two different objects ).
This resolution amounts to 35 angular seconds at a wavelength of 1.3 cm, which is about twice the resolving power of the eye for visible light.
