Jedes Objekt besitzt eine eindeutige Identifikationsnummer ( Identifikator ).
Welche Objektarten ein DLM beinhaltet und wie die Objekte zu bilden sind, ist für Deutschland in den Objektartenkatalogen des Amtlichen Topographisch-Kartographischen Informationssystems ( ATKIS ® ) für das alte Datenmodell und das neue AAA ® -Datenmodell festgelegt.
