Das Nationalmuseum wurde 1818 von einigen begeisterten tschechischen Adeligen und Aristokraten gegründet, etwa um die Zeit, als von Graf Ferenc Széchenyi das ungarische.
Die Sammlungen des Museums wurden zuerst im St. Jakob Kloster , dann ab 1819 im Sternberg Palast in Hradzsin untergebracht .
Auf den endgültigen Platz kamen sie 1846 aus dem für Museumszwecke gekauften Nostitz Palast.
