Mit dem skurrilen Marche grotesque übt er Kritik am Militarismus und befreit sich von der Stigmatisierung des jugendlichen Kriegsteilnehmers.
Ganz im Sinne eines Hindemithschen Humors macht er den Paradierschritt der Soldateska lächerlich und läßt uns ahnen, was in späteren Jahren einmal Form annehmen sollte in dem Antikriegsstück " Die letzte Blume ".
