Erste Grundlage ist die Liste von über 4000 Institutionen, die aufgrund des Tools ESI ( essential science indicators ) von Thomson Reuters als am häufigsten Zitierte aufgelistet werden.
In einem zweiten Schritt werden zunächst die 700 Besten ausgefiltert und diese wiederum aufgrund der Indikatoren des HEEACT-Rankings gerankt.

The first basis is a list of over 4,000 institutions that are registered as being the most frequently cited based on the ESI ( Essential Science Indicators ) tool by Thomson Reuters.
As a second step, the 700 best universities are selected; these then are ranked according to indicators of the HEEACT Ranking.
