Ausgangspunkt für An Idyl war von Herkomers Ölgemälde After the Toil of the Day, das er anschließend in einer Reihe von Grafiken ausgearbeitet hatte.
Daraus entwickelte er ein mehrteiliges musikalisches Bühnenwerk, das die bildnerische Form dreidimensional und mit einer musikalisch begleiteten Handlung realisierte.Von Herkomer verstand die Bühne dabei als eine Erweiterung der Leinwand, die ihm ein viel größeres Arsenal an Gestaltungsmitteln zur Verfügung stellte als jede andere Ausdrucksform:

The point of departure for An Idyl was von Herkomer’s oil painting After the Toil of the Day, from which he subsequently worked out a series of prints.
From these he developed a multipart musical work for the stage, which presented the artistic form three-dimensionally and with a plot accompanied by music.
