In his Handbuch der speziellen Arzneimittel ( Manual of Special Medicines ), Johann Christian August Clarus ( 1774 – 1854 ) recommended hops as a treatment for poor appetite associated with gastric catarrh, for the mucous membranes of the stomach and for insomnia.
