A new subspecies, Welwitschia mirabilis subsp. namibiana was published in December 2001 in the journal Willdenowia.
The Berlin-Dahlem plants of " group 1 " with reddish brown male cones agree with material from Angola and belong to Welwitschia mirabilis subsp. mirabilis, the tardily flowering plants with glaucous-green male cones of " group 2 " are of Namibian origin and belong to the new subspecies Welwitschia mirabilis subsp. namibiana.
