Ein neues Projekt zielt nun darauf ab, das tumorfördernde Molekül EpCAM zu hemmen, um so neue Therapieansätze zu entwickeln.

Das Molekül EpCAM , kurz für „ Epithelial Cell Adhesion Molecule “ , wird von vielen Krebszellen und auch von Krebsstammzellen in großer Menge produziert und begünstigt das Wachstum der Tumoren .

EpCAM soll daher als Angriffspunkt für neue Tumortherapien dienen, so auch in einem neuen Projekt unter der Leitung von Professor Olivier Gires, Klinikum der Universität München, und Dr. Dierk Niessing, Helmholtz Zentrum München.

A new project will study the therapeutic potential of inhibiting the action of a tumor-promoting molecule called EpCAM.

The abbreviation EpCAM stands for “ Epithelial Cell Adhesion Molecule ” , a membrane protein that is present on the surface of many types of tumor cells , is produced in large amounts by tumor-initiating cells , and promotes tumor growth .

EpCAM therefore presents an attractive point of attack for the development of novel approaches to cancer therapy.
