Im Jahre 1975 wurden das BIV Wusterhausen und das BIV Potsdam zusammengeschlossen.
Daraus ging das Staatliche Institut für Epizootiologie und Tierseuchenbekämpfung (SIFET) beim Ministerium für Land-, Forst- und Nahrungsgüterwirtschaft der DDR hervor, das am 1.1.1985 seine Arbeit aufnahm.
Nach der Wiedervereinigung wurde das SIFET in die damalige Bundesforschungsanstalt für Viruskrankheiten der Tiere (BFAV; heute Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut) überführt und es wurden am Standort Wusterhausen die Institute für Epidemiologie und für Epidemiologische Diagnostik gegründet, die 2003 im Institut für Epidemiologie zusammengeführt wurden.

This resulted in the foundation of the State Institute for Epizootiology and Animal Disease Control (SIFET) within the portfolio of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food of the GDR, which resumed its work on January 1, 1985.
After the reunification of Germany the SIFET was incorporated into the Federal Research Centre for Virus Diseases of Animals (BFAV; today Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut) and the Institutes of Epidemiology and of Epidemiological Diagnostics were founded at the Wusterhausen site, which merged in 2003 to form the Institute of Epidemiology.
