Der Erzdiakon aus Aberdeen John Barbour verfasste sein (pseudo-)biographisches Werk über das Leben und Wirken des legendären schottischen Königs Robert Bruce etwa 50 Jahre nach dessen Tod (ca. 1375) im Umfeld des ersten Stewart Königs Robert II.
Im Zentrum der Erzählung stehen die Kämpfe und Schlachten, die nach dem Tod Alexanders III. ab 1306 zwischen den Engländern und den Schotten stattfanden.
