2008 erhielt er den Nobelpreis für Medizin für seine Untersuchungen zum Zusammenhang zwischen Infektionen mit humanen Papilloma-Viren und Gebärmutterhalskrebs.

1929 übernahm er die Leitung des Instituts für Physiologie am neu gegründeten Kaiser-Wilhelm-Institut ( heute Max-Planck-Institut ) für medizinische Forschung in Heidelberg und wurde zum ordentlichen Honorarprofessor der Medizinischen Fakultät ernannt.
