Während sich Fanny Steinthal mit einer bedeutenden Miniatursammlung ein eigenes Sammelfeld erschloss, diente die Gemäldesammlung in erster Linie der repräsentativen Ausstattung ihrer Villa in der Uhlandstraße in Berlin-Charlottenburg.
Bevorzugt gesammelt wurden zunächst niederländische und flämische Maler, die dem großbürgerlichen Kunstgeschmack der Zeit entsprachen, aber auch Werke des Impressionismus, so dass die Bandbreite der Sammlung bis in die damalige zeitgenössische Kunst reichte.
