Das Einlassventil, „Schnüffelventil“ genannt, öffnet und schließt automatisch mit Hilfe von Unterdruck.Das Auslassventil wird durch die von Daimler erfundene Kurvennutensteuerung betätigt, die gleichzeitig auch die Drehzahl steuert.
Erstmals gelangt der von Maybach entwickelte „Schwimmer“-Vergaser zum Einsatz, nach heutiger Lesart ein Oberflächen-Vergaser, der den problemlosen Betrieb mit Benzin erst ermöglicht.

The intake valve, known as a “snifting valve”, opened and closed automatically with the aid of vacuum pressure; the exhaust valve was operated by a curved groove control invented by Daimler, which also kept the revolutions in check.
The engine also featured for the first time the “floating” carburettor – better known today as the surface carburettor – developed by Maybach, which enabled the problem-free combustion of petrol.
