The park which was inscribed by UNESCO as a world Heritage Site in 1997 and is also a Biosphere Reserve, covers 715km2, and includes the Peaks consisting of all the ground above 3200m with two small salients extending lower down to 240m along the Sirimon and Naromoro tracks.
Surrounding the park is Mount Kenya National Reserve with an area of approximately 2095 km2.

In den Geröllfeldern sprießen nur noch sporadisch einige widerstandsfähige Heidearten, und in den Gipfelregionen lassen die blanken Felsen, Gletscher und Schneefelder keine Vegetation mehr zu.Das Gebiet oberhalb von 3200m gehört zum Mount Kenya National Park.
Bis an die Parkgrenzen führen Straßen, und so kann die Wanderung mit gewissem Höhenvorsprung beginnen.
