Ziel dieses Teilprojekts ist die physikalische und chemische Charakterisierung von Eiskeimen ( IN = ice nuclei ) und Residuen von kleinen Eispartikeln ( IPR = ice particle residuals ) in der Atmosphäre.
Hierzu wird ein virtueller Gegenstromimpaktor (CVI, counterflow virtual impactor) mit online Aerosolmassenspektroskopie und der Messung physikalischer Aersoleigenschaften, z.B. Partikelgröße, kombiniert.
Untersucht werden aus realen Wolken gesammelte Eispartikelresiduen und IN, welche unter Verwendung eines Eisnukleuszählers aktiviert wurden.

CVI-Funktionsprinzip Am TROPOS sind verschiedene Gegenstrom-Impaktoren (engl. Counterflow Virtual Impactor, CVI) zur in-situ Sammlung von Wolkentropfen und Eispartikeln und gleichzeitiger Abtrennung von nicht aktivierten Partikeln entwickelt und aufgebaut worden.
Mit den verschiedenen CVI Systemen wurden wesentliche Beiträge in Forschungsvorhaben zur Tropfenaktivierung (Tropfenaktivierung) und Eiskeimen (Eiskeime) in realen Wolken geleistet.
