Nach der Dissertation in Atomphysik beschäftigte er sich seit 1979 mit Lasern, zunächst als Post-Doktorand am Stanford Research Institute ( SRI ), nach der Habilitation 1985 als Vertreter einer Professur an der Universität Würzburg und anschließend als Professor ( C2 ) in Freiburg.
1991 wechselte er auf eine ordentliche Professur ( tenured full professor ) an die University of Tennessee, USA.
Zwei Jahre später wurde er als Direktor an das neu gegründete Max-Born-Institut in Adlershof ( MBI ) berufen und seit 1994 ist er gleichzeitig Professor ( C4 ) an der TU Berlin.
