The 278 participants in this year ’s nationwide Scripps National Spelling Bee, the US spelling contest for high school students, were fully prepared for words such as “ Turnverein ” or “ geistlich, ” but many more originally German concepts were demanded ; more than 50.
One has to think twice before one ventures to spell “Distelfink” or “Glockenspiel” – words which defy all English pronunciation rules (to the extent that such exist at all).
According to the rules of the game, the contestants at least can request the definition of a word or other pronunciation possibilities before they tackle spelling it.
