Er soll durch die Herstellung von Halskrausen und Rüschen auf einer Plisiermaschine auf die Idee gekommen sein, anstatt textiler Werkstoffe Papier durch gefräste Walzen zu schicken und damit ein elastisches Packmaterial herzustellen.
Im Dezember 1871 wurde ihm dafür das Patent erteilt.
