Als die Christen in jene Höhle eintraten, fanden sie dieselbe von einem himmlischen Licht erleuchtet, von Engelhänden in eine Kapelle verwandelt, und in der Felsenwand einen mit Purpur bedeckten Altar errichtet.
Laurentius baute vor dem Eingange der Grotte eine Kirche und weihte dieses Heiligtum dem Erzengel mit Bewilligung des Papstes Gelasius am 29. September 493.
