Nach dem Ende seines Studiums jobbte Nachtwey zunächst auf Handelsschiffen und als Lastwagenfahrer, dann als Assistent eines Nachrichten-Redakteurs bei der US-Fernseh-Gesellschaft NBC in New York.
1976 begann er als Lokalfotograf in Neu Mexiko zu arbeiten, ab 1980 als freier Fotograf in New York.
1981 fuhr Nachtwey nach Nordirland, um die Unruhen vor allem in Belfast festzuhalten.
