Am 26. Dezember 2004 morgens um 7.58 Uhr lokaler Zeit löste ein Seebeben der Stärke 9,0 auf der Richterskala eine gigantische Flutwelle aus, die von Indonesien, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Indien, Malediven, bis Kenia und Somalia schwere Verwüstungen an den Küstengebieten auslöste.
Obwohl schon nach wenigen Stunden klar war, dass Gebiete und Staaten in einem Maß betroffen waren, wie es bisher noch nie passiert war, wurden die tatsächlichen Opferzahlen und Schadensausmaße erst Wochen später abschätzbar.

On 26 December 2004 at 7.58 in the morning local time, a seaquake measuring 9.0 on the Richter scale triggered a gigantic tidal wave, which caused massive devastation to costal regions from Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, India and the Maldives to as far away as Kenya and Somalia.
Although the unprecedented extent of the disaster, as well as the regions and states affected, was clear after just a few hours, it was nevertheless many weeks before the true number of victims and magnitude of the destruction could be calculated.

Allerdings löst nicht jedes Erdbeben am Meeresgrund einen Tsunami aus.
