Aus allen Teilen der Monarchie gelangten Bodenfunde in die kaiserliche Sammlung nach Wien – solche zufälliger Art wie der 1799 entdeckte Goldschatz von Nagyszentmiklós, aber auch Schätze, die aus gezielten Ausgrabungen herrühren oder auf Reisen erworben wurden.
Als eigentliches Geburtsjahr der Antikensammlung muss das Jahr 1798 bezeichnet werden, in dem Franz de Paula Neumann zum alleinigen Direktor des nun vereinten „k. k. Münz und Antikenkabinettes“ bestellt wurde.

Archaeological finds from throughout the monarchy entered the imperial collection in Vienna, some of them found by accident, such as the golden treasure of Nagyszentmiklós discovered in 1799, but others that were the result of purposeful excavation or had been acquired during travels.
The year of birth of the Collection of Greek and Roman Antiquities must be seen as 1798, the year in which Franz de Paula Neumann was named sole director of the newly united Imperial and Royal Cabinet of Coins and Antiquities.

Zu den weiteren Höhepunkten der Sammlung gehören die überlebensgroße Votivstatue eines Mannes aus Zypern, der Amazonensarkophag, die Bronzetafel mit dem berühmten Senatus consultum de Bacchanalibus, das Theseus-Mosaik aus Salzburg und nicht zuletzt der Jüngling vom Magdalensberg, um nur einige wenige zu nennen.

Among the other highlights of the collection are the larger-than life Votive Statue of a Man from Cyprus, the Amazonian Sarcophagus, the bronze tablet with the famous Senatus consultum de Bacchanalibus, the Theseus Mosaic from Salzburg and, not least, the Youth from the Magdalensberg, to name only a few.
