I. need [GB niːd, Am nid] VERBE mod When need is used as a verb meaning to require or to want it is generally translated by avoir besoin de in French: I need help = j'ai besoin d'aide.
When need is used as a verb to mean must or have to it can generally be translated by devoir + infininitive or by il faut que + subjunctive: I need to leave = je dois partir, il faut que je parte.
When need is used as a modal auxiliary in the negative to say that there is no obligation it is generally translated by ne pas être obligé de + infininitive: you needn't finish it today = tu n'es pas obligé de le finir aujourd'hui.
