- En EEUU el alcalde (mayor) de una ciudad es elegido por sus habitantes y tiene poderes ejecutivos. En Inglaterra y Gales, es el jefe de un ayuntamiento council de una ciudad o un municipio (borough), elegido tradicionalmente por otros concejales (councillors). En algunas ciudades grandes se le confiere el título de Lord Mayor y su equivalente en Escocia es provost o Lord Provost. Llevan a cabo tareas oficiales pero tienen poco poder político. En los últimos años varias ciudades grandes británicas han empezado a someter el cargo de alcalde a la votación popular. En 2002, Londres fue la primera de estas ciudades en elegir un alcalde con poderes ejecutivos, quien desempeña el cargo por un período de cuatro años.
